Basic Conditions

Being that this is the beginning of your path to becoming a respiratory care practitioner it seems only fitting to help expose you to the more common disease conditions you will be learning within this class and treating while in the clinical setting.   This period of your training is probably the most intimidating due to the fact that practically everything that you are experiencing is, more than likely, the first time you have heard of these conditions or terms.

Within this Respiratory World Blog it will be my wish to provide you readers with direction to understanding the profession that is heavily involved with many person’s well-being and for them to lead as close to normal lives as possible. 

The following list is compiled of the most common conditions we respiratory therapists deal with on a daily basis, the acronym, CBABE, (Cystic Fibrosis, Bronchitis, Asthma, Bronchiectasis, Emphysema) will help you explore the differences in each and open you up to how each is defined and experienced. 

CBABE

  1. CF foundation blog: Is a part of a website that provides basic information on Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and many interesting topics on how one could live with CF, from patient to caregiver along with providing some answers to FAQ.  There is much more than I can describe here, I encourage you to look the entire site over and get familiar with CF.
  2. Patient: delivers great insight on bronchitis that include from a patient’s perspective to education for those that know little about the condition.  Patient is an independent health platform that offers many conditions to learn about, which gives you, the student, a great opportunity to research a myriad of topics.
  3. Verywell: is a site that offers reliable, yet simple to understand information about Asthma and many other health topics that will have you wanting to save it as one of your “favorites” on your menu bar.
  4. Bronchiectasis R Us is a site that offers many independent topics on Bronchiectasis, from what it is, to managing and much more!  This condition has such an effect on patients that many on this site have shared their stories as a way of education and support. 
  5. The COPD Store: gives the Emphysema novice a way to understand this dreaded disease.  Their section on “The Beginners Guide to Emphysema” has an abundance of information to help you launch your understanding of this condition, but don’t stop there, scroll through the COPD Store’s many resources that can help you as you move into the hospital setting.
